Petrol is Cheap ... in India

Last week, India also saw steep hikes in fuel prices. Petrol in Mumbai now cost Rs 52 a litre, while diesel prices are up to Rs 36 a litre. (Rs 10 = MR 0.76)

My old friend Capt. Gian Singh Sehmi emailed me this:

I filled up my car's fuel tank, and I thought fuel has become really expensive after the recent price hike. But then I compared it with other common liquids and did some quick calculations, and I felt a little better. To know why, see the results below – you'll be surprised at how outrageous some other prices are ! !

Diesel (regular) in Mumbai : Rs.36.08 per litre

Petrol (speed) in Mumbai : Rs.52 per litre

Coca Cola 330 ml can : Rs.20 = Rs.61 per litre

Dettol antiseptic 100 ml Rs.20 = Rs.200 per litre

Radiator coolant 500 ml Rs.160 = Rs.320 per litre

Pantene conditioner 400 ml Rs.165 = Rs.413 per litre

Listerine 100 ml Rs.45 = Rs. 450 per litre

Red Bull 150 ml can : Rs.75 = Rs.500 per litre

Corex cough syrup 100 ml Rs.57 = Rs. 570 per litre

Evian water 500 ml Rs. 330 = Rs. 660 per litre
(Rs. 660 for a litre of WATER !! And the buyers don't even know the source. Also Evian spelled backwards is Naive!)

Cup of coffee at any decent business hotel = Rs. 500 per litre

Old Spice after shave lotion 100 ml Rs. 175 = Rs. 1750 per litre

Pure almond oil 25 ml Rs. 68 = Rs. 2720 per litre

And this is the REAL KICKER...

HP DeskJet colour ink cartridge 21 ml Rs.1900 = Rs. 90476 per litre!!!
(Now you know why computer printers are so cheap ? So they have you hooked for the ink !)

So, the next time you're at the pump, don't curse anyone – just be glad your car doesn't run on cough syrup, after shave, coffee, or God forbid, printer ink!

  1. Your fellow Captain put an interesting spin at petrol price increase by looking at it from another angle. But alas, it is flawed. Our daily usage of Old Spice, colour ink cartridge, etc. is extremely minute compared to petrol usage. Well, unless people in India take shower in Old Spice and drink gallons of coke daily!

Tsk tsk. I believe you missed his drift, completely.

Have we lost our sense of humour?

  4. capt., many of our leaders made fools of themselves whenever they open their mouths. Having spent so much of our hard taxes to travel around the whole world, they are still so ignorant that many foreigners might take all malaysians to be nimcompoops because we keep putting them as our leaders!Unless and until we stopped doing such stupid act, we earned it!!Thousands keep listening to stupid comments put up by so-called leader who had put economic mill-stones around our necks in the name of malaysia boleh, ie, after we had celebrated more than half a century of Independence!! We still believe in his lies when all the raayat still suffer financially from his grandeur projects put up by his cronies who had to be bailed out by the gomen!!! This is the basic character of we malaysians. it is alright to be cheated by one's own, no matter what!!

  5. Captain,
We have been driniking distilled water (distilled)at RM1.00 per bottle of 500 ml as against petrol at RM1.92 (then) that we forgot that distilled water was more expensive. Now petrol has been priced higher to justify the more difficult process to produce it.
The way to go now is for the government to subsidize the conversion to gas power and make them easily avaialable. That will ensure more people can benefit the low rate of natural gas as enjoyed by some of the IPP owned by those rich tycoons who enjoyed captured market by virtue of the lopsided agreement with Tenaga.

  6. Capt., lop-sided agreements by the gomen have been the hall-mark of all those 'piratization, projects. just name one where the raayat have really benefitted. None! they were designed with the aim of swindling the poor raayat right from the begining. Even the most idiotic bean counter would confirm this! As i have said earlier, it is high time UN form a international court to trial all ex-leaders of the world. get all the bankers to open all their books when ex-leaders and their families open accounts with them! Then the truth shall be made public. of course publicly named cronies and their families. likewise should be treated in the same manner!

  7. Salam Capt.,

Yup, that mineral water Evian is damn expensive.

I used to work at 7-Eleven and here is also expensive.

I don't remember by how much but if I remembered correctly, the small bottle is more than double than the price of big bottle mineral water.

Try go to 7-Eleven and ask for Evian! Hehehe

p.s. Did you wear a coat during the interview sailor?
